As many of you know, I was born in Sri Lanka and left when I was 6 years old. Sri Lanka was affected by war at the time of my departure and I had never returned until just recently. I had always wanted to go back but never had the opportunity to do so. I am happily settled down with my wife in Toronto, after moving from Oman to France.
Thankfully 5 years ago, the war came to an end in Sri Lanka and it has become safer for travel. All my family has returned, expect me so it was time to visit home. It has always been on my Bucket list, but like all good things, I was waiting for the right time to go. In 2017, I got married and the obvious choice for our honeymoon was Sri Lanka; especially since my wife is Canadian-born of Sri Lankan descent. We were very excited to see Sri Lanka together.
It has been over 26 years since I was there; I was scared, nervous and a bit emotional. I was so happy to return home after such a long time. It was funny how I still remembered 80% of the people and the places. I even had the pleasure of reconnecting with a few old friends and family members.
It was a long trip but totally worth it. It took us nearly 3 days to get there and when we arrived the first stop was my childhood home. It was located in a village called “USAN” which is part of Jaffna then we visited our family temple which is located south of USAN.
JAFFNA FISHERMEN DISTRICT
Our plan was to visit a few major cities during our stay in Sri Lanka. We stayed in Jaffna, Colombo, Kandy, Wellawaya, then from Kandy, we arranged a taxi to drive through Nuwara Eliya, Ella to see all the nature of making teas and the landscapes of Sri Lanka.
This trip made me realized how time flies and to appreciate life even more. To be honest, I was so impressed by how things had changed and improved over the years. Furthermore, I can see everything getting better and better from here on in Sri Lanka. I would highly recommend for anyone to visit. I am already planning to go again next January. Meet me there?
WE ABSOLUTELY HAD THE BEST TIME WITH OUR FRIENDS & I can see Sri Lanka becoming one of the top travel destinations for 2018 and beyond.
